A recent discovery, O'Death has soared in to my Top 10. Born(ed) and raised in Texas, i can't quite shake that dark, bluegrass, drink-yourself-in-to-a-miserable-depression fiddle-country that made the all three Hank Williams' and Steve Earle s'famous. With O'Death, it's that same feeling The Builders and the Butchers create but there is something distinctively different about them. Their stage presence is so... there's not a word, it's just captivating.
"There’s a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals." You can't tell me that doesn't make your stomach do little flips!?
That is the kind of shit i love about music. That you can just do that. I don't care how shitty a band is, i'll give them props for using trash and odd objects to make harmonies. Because, when it's a geniune attempt (which is fairly obvious to decipher), it's generally recognized as art and not as an attention piece. And O'Death has it all: The lyrics, the sound, the presence, ALL OF IT. Greg Jamie's vocals are almost identical to the recordings, they're consistent and they all have that look on their face that matches their music without being cheesy. They're genuinely at the core of their music and i adore them.
I've had to force them off the "iPod Daily's" just so i don't wear them down... like i always manage to do.
I can't even listen to a full Vashti Bunyan track anymore because of my terrible habit.
I can't say that they're for everyone but, i think that there is somehting for everyone in their music.
So, i give you two of my favorites:
(all apologies to Bob Pycior for my technological-handicap and inablitiy to figure out a way to post videos without chopping off the right quarter of it, you too, sir, are important)
O'Death - Angeline (FD Session)
O'Death - Vacant Moon (FD Session)
